The SENSEX (BSE30) is a major stock market index which tracks the performance of 30 major companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. The companies are chosen based on the liquidity, trading volume and industry representation. The SENSEX, is a free-float market capitalization-weighted index. The Index has a base value of 100 as of 1978-79. Sensex has started at 100 in 1979 and has given tremendous returns since then. It just shows how much a long term investor with patience can gain. Right knowledge is also a key factor to succeed. The BSE SENSEX was created in the year 1979 as benchmark to track the Indian Stock Market. Since then 100s of stocks have moved in and out of the SENSEX depending on the Economy. All the Dates taken into account for calculation are as on March-31st of respective years. Performance of Sensex Since 1979 SENSEX is India’s oldest and most widely tracked stock market benchmark index. It is country’s first equity index which launched on 2nd Jan 1986 with the Base Value of 100 as on year 1978-79. Suppose you have Sensex data from April 1979* to 12th Jan 2018. * Official trading began only in the mid-80s. So the first few years is back-calculated and all risks may not be captured. Published since 1 January 1986, the S&P BSE SENSEX is regarded as the pulse of the domestic stock markets in India. The base value of the SENSEX was taken as 100 on 1 April 1979 and its base year as 1978–79 . The 2 nd and the 3 rd columns show the Sensex level on March 31 st for all years since 1979. Next Column shows the 1-year return for each 1-year period. For example, if you invested in 1979, your return at the end of the year would have been 28.57%.
