Maybe more young people should consider learning a skilled trade like electric, plumbing, masonry, drywall, HVAC, etc. Just to be clear, I'm not saying college isn't a good choice.

A trade I would look into is welding. Handy skill, well paid, and always in need of people. Your local community college or vocational school should be able to help. Even welding supply companies have knowledgable people who could make specific recommendations on how to get started. Take a look at hospital jobs - phlebotomy, LPN (and later on move to RN), LNA if you must to start, radiology, or plenty of other trade-type jobs there. Plumber, HVAC or Electricians apprentice if you're interested in the more manual jobs. At the start it's not amazing pay, but it's fairly reliable and has a good upward trend over the first 8 years. If you're looking to learn a quick skill and coast by on that its probably not for you, but if you're okay with getting into a career with lot of growth potential (both learning growth and industry growth),constant learning challenges, but equally significant pay potential its one you should consider. I think trade schools are excellent for people who want to learn a skill or have an interest in something specific. If you like carpentry, electrical, HVAC, auto mechanics, radiology tech etc. then it is a great way to learn that skill without having to waste time in general ed classes that will have no practical application.

You don't learn anything with the defence force, and some of their qualifications don't cross over into the civilian world. It's better to do the trade as a civilian and then join the army after if you really want.
